Synopsis
Dreaming big in the corner of the film industry. The protagonist of this story is Taro the Crib. A “Crib” is a piece of wood placed beneath the rails to level them during dolly shots. Though Taro is nothing more than a tiny, unseen cog supporting the world of cinema, he carries an enormous dream. He wants to become a film director. One day, a glowing crib named Pikakichi appears, and Taro’s dream begins to move forward.
Director’s Statement
I once worked on Japanese film sets as part of the production team.
My days were filled with tasks that seemed mundane at first glance: ordering boxed lunches, sorting garbage that rarely drew attention. At such a scene, I gradually became interested in the existence of a small board laid under the camera’s dolly rail, Crib.
It never stands out. No one pays it any mind. Even so, it certainly supports the filming.
I was strangely encouraged by that figure. I named it ‘Taro the Crib’. Perhaps he, like me, harbors a grand dream. Perhaps he, too, is tired of his assigned role and position. These imaginings slowly transformed into an impulse to create.
“I” am overwhelmingly and unavoidably myself, and can never become anyone else.
Within that reality are pain, resignation, and frustration. Yet beyond them lies a quiet, profound pride. Through the art of light, I want to affirm that pride.
Taro the Crib was born from that wish. It is a story that Taro and I have walked together.
